Legalisation and Apostille

Where a Notarial act is for use overseas, it is commonly a requirement that a notary’s act is further witnessed through the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (also known as the “FCO”) who will add an ‘Apostille’ (commonly known as The Hague Apostille) confirming the authenticity of the Notary’s signature and seal both of which are registered with the FCO.

The process is also referred to as ‘legalisation’ and may be further authenticated by the Embassy of the receiving jurisdiction. There are a number of countries that require, in addition to Apostille, a further Consular legalisation for example documents for the United Arab Emirates (“UAE”), require Notarial certification, FCO apostille and UAE Consular legalisation.

The legalisation process varies from one Foreign Consulate to another and can be time consuming. We are experienced in dealing with the particular requirements of Foreign Consulates and ensure that documents are legalised as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Hertfordshire Notaries can arrange for an Apostille at the Foreign & Commonwealth Office on an express, same-day service or a standard 3-4 day service. We can also advise you if you have any specific queries regarding the requirements for a specific jurisdiction.

If you are unsure of the requirements for the legalisation of your document, please contact us and we will be happy to assist you.
